Gilbey’s Township Combos

Client Challenge: Our challenge was to help our client, Libra Productions, with their campaign to explore and encourage new township drinking rituals for a DiegoSA mainstream spirit, Gilbey’s. We assisted them by designing point-of-sale collaterol that delivers on the message of a mixability drinking ritual at an affordable price. We were charged with ensuring that the message was communicated in a language/style that is native to the market, we applied our minds to the copy-writing, design and layout of the posters.

Our Solution: Working closely with our client, who wanted the work to draw deeply from the real world insight of the sharing culture ukugazatha, we co-created the poster campaign that advertised some ‘combos’ named after township names for popular cars. The aim was for the artwork to connect with consumers and spark conversation, encouraging consumers to enquire about and trial the product.

Dave’s approach

Drawing on references of township small business hand-drawn signage, I layered together illustrated elements like the vehicles with custom typography, making the “kasi lingo” pop. We wanted the posters to pique the consumers curiosity in taverns, driving them to ask for more information on the combo products advertised. We really enjoyed the co-creation with our client and drawing on our cultural intelligence and applying our copywriting skills to the task at hand.

Client Challenge: Our client Kagiso Trust commissioned us to design an invitation for the Eric Molobi Scholarship Programme 10th Anniversary Reunion Dinner.

Our Solution: We wanted the invitation, which was quite copy-heavy, to be easy-to-read and enticing, piqueing the guests’ interest and encouraging attendance at the event.

Dave’s approach

Drawing from the warm and welcoming colours of the logo, I designed an infographic-influenced invitation, laying the text out in an easy-to-read way that highlighted the key points requiring attention.

Logo Design

Client Challenge: We were tasked with the branding of ThinkWorks and FuseWorks, two separate but connected entities that required a co-branding approach. We needed to design a logo which captures the essence of the businesses – lateral and strategic thinking and solutions and then interpret it into email signatures.

Our Solution: Our client wanted the logo to visually represent “thinking outside the box” (for ThinkWorks) and tech solutions for strategic thinking (for FuseWorks). Both brands have a clean typographic logo with an asterisk – an asterisk represents a ‘wild card’ in coding, as directed by the client.

Meghaa’s approach

Since the two brands are related, the flat colour palette enables us to easily show their connection, along with a flat illustration style that compliments and affirms the brand association. The client knew what he wanted, and gave me clear instructions which I was able to interpret into a polished final co-created product.

Women’s Month

Social Media Content

Client Challenge: We’ve had a special place in our hearts for PowerFM 987, our ECD and co-Founder SJ Boden was one of the first studio guests on Tim Modise’s inaugural show on day one of the official on-air broadcast and our superstar co-Founder and Chief Illustrator David Tshabalala has been interviewed on air about his craft too. So it was with gusto and delight that we were asked to produce some social media content for the station to laud Women’s Month in SA under the hashtag #987Women in 2016.

Our Solution: Power FM invited female guest speakers to be a part of their radio station for Women’s Month and we were tasked with creating the content campaign for it.

We used a simple, bold design that stood out from the dark charcoal background. We edited part of the photography to add a radio element.

Global Illustration Challenge

Client Challenge: Adobe and Coca-Cola briefed 15 creative professionals from Spain to Germany, South Africa to Japan, to develop an inspired work of art. The aim was to call on other artists to create crafted content to benefit a meaningful cause, The 2020 Special Olympics.

Our Solution: Referencing from Japanese watercolour art, David chose to use the red circle as the sun. This is consistent with the motto for the Olympic games: Discover Tomorrow, where the rising sun element represents a new day. For the main focal points of the artwork, he took visual cues from old and modern Japanese architecture, highlighting Tokyo’s aesthetic.

Quotation from David:

I took visual cues from the iconic red circle on the Japanese flag. It’s a very strong graphic element and I digitally painted it with a watercolour effect that pays homage to the Japanese style and approach to their art. My starting point was representing that element as the rising sun.
