Executive Creative Director and co-Founder of Suketchi, Sarah-Jane Boden shares some of her favourite poster designs and the events or brands behind them – as seen on her recent travels while escaping the South African ‘winter’ and getting lost in the European and USA summer: Followers of my Instagram account know that when I am lucky enough to get to travel, I love to capture standout design from all the different highways and byways that I pass through. Observing how different cultures advertise their events, brand their products, magazines, media and other social initiatives is a great way to quickly soak up some of the local graphic design, art direction and DTP trends. Here’s my list of 5 of 8 Poster designs that I simply had to snap and click for more on. Number One: Twelfth Night Wandering through Central Park in New York my eye was caught by this popping green, black and white board, advertising a free Shakespeare -in-the Park event at the Public Theatre – as part of the Public Works programme that runs through the summer months. TWELFTH NIGHT

Number Two: Bruxelles Les Bains

Brussels or Bruxelles – either works – is a rapidly-changing city, increasingly considered as one of the most exciting emerging cities for creatives.  Anybody who has spent any time in Brussels knows that it is the ‘heart of the European Union’, its air heavy with interweaving multi-lingual conversations and its grungy pavements brimming with quirky terrace-cafes, bars and hidden shopping gems. Bruxelles Les Bains is Brussels’ urban beach installation, open to the public annually through the month of July into August.  Organised by the City of Brussels, the beach, featuring real beach sand and palm trees – runs over 5 kilometres along the Quai des Péniches, and features all the fun stuff we all love to do at the beach – including pétanque, DJs, kids zones, volleyball, loungers and lots more…

Number Three: Fly Away Festival

Staying in Brussels, as that’s where we spotted it – the Fly Away festival says what it is – a festival where all 500+ guests fly away to the beaches of an exotic location – for this year’s version Corsica, on an all-inclusive package. Conceived by two Belgian entrepreneurs – one a travel agent and the other a concert organiser, they had the idea to combine their two specialties and voila… Fly Away.  The first ‘All-In’ festival of its kind, guests were treated to over 12 Belgian rock bands playing up-close and personal – so it made sense that the main partner was popular radio station Pure FM.

Number Four:

If you think the poster makes you hungry, whatever you do, don’t read the menu of the All-Star BBQ event – held in Brooklyn this September.  Curated by Sean Brock, owner of Husk restaurant and lover of real food, the line up of celebrities includes Jarobi White from a Tribe Called Quest – one of the original members of Hip Hop’s most iconic groups – who knew he was also a chef!?  And there’s also Roy Wood Jnr – very funny guy with Trevor Noah on The Daily Show- who we can assume was mostly cracking jokes for all the hungry punters… as well as a number of highly respected chefs from popular NYC restaurants. We’ll never know if Roy cooks, as we didn’t make it – but the poster made the food jump out of the NYC walls, triggering instant hunger vibes. What I love most about the concept behind the All Star BBQ is that it is just one event that makes up part of the fast-growing Taste Talks Food & Drink umbrella movement – all carefully curated yet organically promoted:
